This is a known quirk with all Savages. There were several posts on this subject about a year ago. Someone stated that when Suzuki decided to put a fith gear on the Savage (1986-1988 models have 4 speeds), they squeezed fith gear into the same crankcase space, so the result is a "tight notch" up into fith. Don't know if it's true but sounds reasonable. Don't worry about it but you'll have to live with it.
